Over 7 million people in the San Francisco Bay Area are at risk of tsunami impacts, especially in coastal communities and cities along the Bayshore. There is more than a 40% chance of a potentially damaging tsunami in the next 50 years.
Tsunamis are massive waves triggered by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. In deep ocean waters, these waves are hardly noticeable, but as they approach land, they grow taller due to shallower depths. The speed of tsunami waves depends on the ocean's depth, not their distance from the source.
