What is SSI?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federally funded program designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. SSI also includes medical coverage under the Medi-Cal program.
What is SSI Advocacy?
SSI Advocacy refers to help provided to apply for SSI by Alameda County Social Services Agency Social Workers or contracted attorneys. Alameda County Social Services Agency has contracted with attorneys from the Homeless Action Center and Bay Area Legal Aid to provide SSI Advocacy services. They also offer assistance applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and the Cash Assistance for Immigrants Program (CAPI).
Application assistance is available throughout the entire application and appeal processes. Social Workers or attorneys can assist in contacting physical or mental health providers to obtain a physical or mental health evaluation that may be required to accompany the application.
