Types of Abuse

Child Abuse may occur in different forms; physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect.

See below examples of some types of abuse a child may encounter:

  • Physical Abuse

    Physical Abuse is a non-accidental injury inflicted by a parent, guardian or member of the household. This includes acts of cruelty, excessive punishment or failure to protect the child.

  • Emotional Abuse

    The verbal threats, hostile actions or other mental sufferings inflicted by a parent or guardian that causes severe mental distress or fear to the child.

  • Sexual Abuse

    Any sexual intention or action towards a child, or exposure to material of a sexual nature.

  • Sexual Exploitation

    Abuse of a position of vulnerability or trust for sexual purposes

  • Neglect

    The failure of a caregiver to provide for their child's health and wellbeing. This can include, but isn't limited to the following:

    • Inadequate food, shelter or hygiene
    • Inadequate supervision or abandonment 
    • Inadequate medical care
    • Involving the child in illegal activities
